Renal dysplasia is a disorder in which the kidneys do not develop normally. It most commonly affects Shih Tzus, Lhasa apsos, and soft-coated wheaten terriers. Dogs usually become clinically ill before 1 year of age.
Unfortunately, this genetic disease has no cure; many affected dogs will develop kidney failure. Management options are limited and generally expensive. Although some dogs are only carriers of this disorder and have normal kidney function, they can still pass the trait on to their offspring.

La displasia renal es un trastorno en el que los riñones no se desarrollan correctamente. Afecta con mayor frecuencia a Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos y Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers. Los perros con esta enfermedad suelen presentar síntomas clínicos antes del primer año de vida.
Lamentablemente, esta enfermedad genética no tiene cura, y muchos perros afectados desarrollan insuficiencia renal. Las opciones de tratamiento son limitadas y costosas. Algunos perros pueden ser portadores del trastorno sin presentar síntomas, pero aun así pueden transmitir la enfermedad a su descendencia.
